Vol 3: Chapter 3: The One Who Got Away
The Atonement of the Guilty
The One Who Got Away
I arrived at Lily's room, but it didn't seem as noisy as it had been with Finne.
Or rather, it was too quiet... I had a bad feeling about something.
As a maid passed by her room, I asked her how Lily was doing.
"Umm, Lily-chan... the girl with Assassin skills. How was her condition?"
I didn't know if she had ever been into Lily's room, but I wanted some information anyway.
"If it's Lady Lily, she's probably still asleep... I knocked on the door but there was no response. She's probably in her room. I have some urgent work to do, so I'll excuse myself now."
The maid said that, bowed to me, and left the place.
Asleep...? That can't be possible. I was asleep when I suddenly woken up. After experiencing that, there's no way I could continue sleeping...
But... Lily's room was too quiet for her to be awake. I was so confused I wanted to scream out loud.
I have a feeling of foreboding. I knock on the door, but there's no response. Something's wrong after all.
"Lily-chan!? Are you inside? If you are, at least answer me!"
I knocked on the door, but there was no reply from Lily. No way. No way...!
I decided to use my Sword Saint skill, Physical Enhancement (Medium), to kick down the door.
"Sorry, Lily-chan. I'll come in anyway!"
Saying that, I kicked the door open with all my might. I may have broken it down, but my first priority now is to check on Lily!
I enter Lily's room...
There was a strange smell that smelled like iron...
And then I looked at what was right in front of me.
The inside of the room was bright red.
There was a pool of blood on the floor of the room... and blood was on the walls here and there. ...What is this?
What is this?
What is this? What on earth is this?! Why is it like this?
Where there was a pool of blood on the floor...someone had collapsed.
No, I... I know who it is.
But I don't want to believe it...I hope I'm wrong...
I couldn't help thinking that something like this couldn't possibly be happening... But then I got closer and checked her face.
That was definitely Lily-chan...
A dagger was in her hand and she was slicing her own throat.
"Li, Lily-chan...w, why? Ugh!? Ugh...ahhhh...!"
The death of my childhood friend. Unable to bear the death of a girl who was an irreplaceable part of my life, I vomited all over the floor.
Lily-chan died. She committed suicide...? I can't comprehend it.
After vomiting for a moment, I looked around the room at the mess it was in.
Then, a piece of paper was placed on the blood-stained desk.
On the paper was a short message written in what seemed to be Lily's last handwriting:
"Sorry brother, I'll be there right away."
Ah... I see. Lily-chan went to Aleph's place...
Come to think of it, it's only natural that Lily-chan, who is younger than me, would do something like this. I too had considered death once.
Besides,... Lily-chan... was too kind. She couldn't possibly accept what she'd done. She just wasn't as brazen as me, that's all.
Who could blame her for wanting to run away from this hellish reality?
Lily-chan... You really adored Aleph, didn't you? There was even a time when you were jealous of me. Hehe.
Whenever we met, you would always talk about Aleph. You always said how kind he was, how much he cared about his family, and how proud you were of your brother. And so, whenever we talked about our relationship, you would always say this.
"He is a brother that I am proud of. So I won't forgive Aria-san if you ever make him unhappy!"
Even though you said that, you still wholeheartedly congratulated our relationship... But even so, I'm really sorry I couldn't keep my promise.
Lily-chan... will she go to the same hell as me? That would be terrible.
If possible, I want them to make up over there and live happily as siblings again like before...
Otherwise, this would be too sad. Aleph and Lily... they shouldn't have had to die. They shouldn't have had to.
Both of them were kind and gentle people... and they were also very close siblings, right?
Why, why did it have to come to this? We just wanted to defeat the Demon King... to restore peace, to return to the village together, and live in peace, right?
All I wanted was to live a peaceful, carefree life with the people who are irreplaceable to me...with the people I care about.
Finne, who is a little older than us, is always smiling and always willing to offer advice if someone has a problem.
Then there was such a wonderful girl that I couldn't believe she was my little sister. And yet, she was always considerate of others... Christina was pure and kind-hearted.
And last, although she's very much a brocon girl, she's also considerate. However, she can also be a bit of a spoiled brat. Even so, Lily-chan was always happy to support the relationship between Aleph and me.
And, and, I... loved him more than anything in the world... I wanted to be united with him... I wanted to be happy together with him. My most beloved man... Aleph.
Everyone's gone. I'm left alone.
"Uh, uh..."
I can't take it anymore. This has never been something I could bear from the start.
"Ahhhhhh....Ahhhhh...."
The feelings I've been holding back won't stop.
Finne, Lily, Chris, and Aleph have all gone far away.
Why me?
Am I the only one still alive?
"Whoa ....ahhhhhh"
I burst into anguish on the spot... my mind had reached its limit.
I fainted.
Fever time with a chain of misfortune!
