Chapter 96: I Won't Bring Shame Upon You
Chapter 96: I Won't Bring Shame Upon You
Misty Spirit Sect, Main Hall.
Shen Shuanglian leaned over her desk, meticulously handling documents.
Suddenly, her delicate brows furrowed, and in a flash, she disappeared from the hall.
At this moment, outside the gates of the Misty Spirit Sect, the disciples guarding the entrance had all drawn their swords, staring warily beyond the mountain gate. However, the slight trembling of their blades betrayed their inner fear and unease.
Beyond the gate, a vast crowd of sword cultivators in dark brown robes hovered in the air, accompanied by roaring flood dragons and dazzling phoenixes, exuding an intimidating presence.
At the forefront of the assembled force floated a tall and imposing elder with jet-black hair, his aura immense.
“What’s this?”
The elder’s indifferent voice rang out, yet it exploded like thunder in the ears of the gatekeeping disciples:
“Is this how your new Sect Leader conducts herself, with such disregard for etiquette?”
“You flatter our Sect Leader, Sect Leader Ju.”
A clear and melodious voice rang out.
Shen Shuanglian, standing atop a white crane, descended gracefully outside the sect gate, followed by a group of Misty Spirit Sect disciples.
Her deep blue gown swayed gently as she stood poised and elegant, her features refined and ethereal. Her clear, bright eyes shimmered like melting ice and snow. Simply by standing there, she captivated the gazes of countless disciples from Canghe Sword Sect.
“Haha, so you are the renowned Frost Moon Sword Immortal, Fairy Shen.”
The elder was none other than Ju Canghai, the Sect Leader of the Canghe Sword Sect. He let out a hearty laugh and stroked his black beard.
“Truly a celestial beauty, brimming with youthful vigor. Quite an imposing presence indeed.”
“To take on the heavy responsibility of the Misty Spirit Sect at such a young age, you must have some ability.”
“But…” His tone suddenly shifted, turning cold and arrogant.
“Even your master, Immortal Wu Xun, would show me proper respect when we meet.”
“And yet, you—a mere junior—have the audacity to bar our Canghe Sword Sect’s congratulatory delegation from entering? What kind of conduct is that?”
“We traveled all this way to celebrate your appointment as Sect Leader. How could we be refused at the gates?”
Despite Ju Canghai’s aggressive stance and the overwhelming pressure of three or four Great Purity Realm cultivators, Shen Shuanglian remained composed. Her red lips parted slightly as she spoke with a calm and measured tone.
“Sect Leader Ju, your words are mistaken.”
“As leaders of righteous sects, both Misty Spirit Sect and Canghe Sword Sect stand on the same path of righteousness. What distinction is there in status or rank?”
“My master and I are both Sect Leaders of the Misty Spirit Sect. Naturally, there is no need for me to observe the courtesies of a junior. Mutual respect should suffice.”
Her words were polite yet firm, yielding nothing. Her fearless demeanor in the face of several Great Purity Realm cultivators left a deep impression on both Misty Spirit Sect and Canghe Sword Sect disciples.
“As for why we have not invited your sect inside, it was not by choice.”
Shen Shuanglian’s voice was soft yet steady.
“This was the command of the Immortal Yu Ling.”
“Immortal Yu Ling holds authority over the entire sect. Even as acting Sect Leader, I cannot go against her orders.”
Immortal Yu Ling…
Ju Canghai narrowed his eyes and exchanged a glance with the elder beside him before letting out a sneer.
“Oh? If that is the case, why not invite Immortal Yu Ling to come and speak with us?”
“Immortal Yu Ling is currently in seclusion and cannot receive visitors,” Shen Shuanglian replied, her tone unchanged.
“Liar!”
Ju Canghai roared, his voice laced with anger.
“Immortal Yu Ling just slaughtered all the elders of your Misty Spirit Sect—why would she remain in such an inauspicious place?”
“You think using her as a shield will protect you? Quite the cunning little scheme!”
Shen Shuanglian’s gaze grew sharper, but her tone remained steady.
“Then, what does Sect Leader Ju propose?”
“Hmph.”
Ju Canghai let out a cold laugh before speaking loudly.
“I won’t beat around the bush with a junior like you.”
“Today, I’ve led a grand delegation of Canghe Sword Sect disciples here to offer our congratulations. If word got out that we were denied entry, where would our dignity be?”
“Open the formation at once and allow us to enter for the ceremony.”
The disciples of Misty Spirit Sect instinctively took a step back, intimidated by the sheer oppressive force of the overwhelming army before them.
Yet Shen Shuanglian simply looked at them, her eyes calm and unwavering.
Like an eternal glacier, unmoved by time.
She knew—under no circumstances could she allow these people to enter.
They spoke of celebration, but the moment they crossed the mountain gates, those seemingly amicable disciples of Canghe Sword Sect would reveal their true nature—turning into ravenous wolves and start killing the Misty Spirit Sect disciple left and right.
The very foundation of Misty Spirit Sect would be completely devoured, leaving nothing behind.
Shen Shuanglian took a deep breath and slowly spoke:
“My apologies, Sect Leader Ju. We have already sent word that we are unable to receive guests in the coming days.”
“Whether it was due to negligence on your sect’s part or some other reason, the result remains the same. Please return.”
Her words made Ju Canghai’s expression darken instantly.
“Hmph!”
A cold snort erupted from him, carrying the full weight of a Great Purity Realm cultivator’s oppressive might, pressing directly toward Shen Shuanglian.
The disciples beside her could barely lift their heads under the immense pressure, their bodies trembling. Only Shen Shuanglian remained unmoved, standing tall like a lone plum blossom in the winter frost.
“Young girl, if you insist on being so disrespectful, then I will have no choice but to educate you myself,” Ju Canghai said loftily.
“I’ll give you three breaths of time. If you don’t open the formation, don’t blame me for taking action.”
Ju Canghai was confident.
No matter how much people in the cultivation world praised this Frost Moon Sword Immortal, she was still just a girl in her early twenties.
Faced with an overwhelming force on her doorstep, with hostility teetering on the edge of outright violence, there was no way she wouldn’t be terrified.
But to his surprise, Shen Shuanglian remained utterly composed. Her voice was calm as she stated:
“The Misty Spirit Sect’s grand protective formation is not yet fully restored.”
“However, if it comes down to it, we are willing to exchange the lives of our entire sect for one or two of your Great Purity Realm cultivators. That would not be difficult.”
“The disciples of the Misty Spirit Sect—will fight to the death. There is no retreat.”
Like the quiet glow of the moon, Shen Shuanglian stood tall before the sect gates, her presence luminous and unwavering. She drew her sword and pointed forward.
“Disciples of Misty Spirit Sect.”
“…Follow me to the death.” Her voice was soft yet resolute.
At her command, the thousand disciples behind her unsheathed their swords in perfect unison. Their voices rang out through the mountains—solemn and unyielding:
“We will follow our Sect Leader to the death!”
“We will follow our Sect Leader to the death!”
The sheer force of their conviction silenced the disciples of the Canghe Sword Sect. Even the flood dragons and phoenixes, sensing the chilling resolve, hesitated, shrinking back without a sound.
Ju Canghai’s gaze grew even darker.
—This girl.
Did she really have the courage to stake the entire Misty Spirit Sect in a life-or-death struggle against him?
It seemed her reputation was well earned.
The Frost Moon Sword Immortal, hailed as the number one fairy of the cultivation world—was no mere title.
Just as he was weighing the risks and contemplating his next move, a panicked voice suddenly came from behind him.
“Sect Leader! Bad news!”
“The young master—he’s gone missing!” A disciple rushed forward, breathless.
“What?!”
Ju Canghai’s face changed drastically.
He was about to demand details when, out of the corner of his eye, he caught sight of Shen Shuanglian standing by the sect gates.
After a final cold snort, he flicked his sleeves and turned away.
“All disciples of Canghe Sword Sect—withdraw! Return to the sect!”
<+>
It was only after the Canghe Sword Sect’s forces had fully retreated that Misty Spirit Sect’s disciples finally let out long, exhausted breaths. Many collapsed to the ground, drained.
Even resisting the pressure of that confrontation had pushed them to their limits.
Shen Shuanglian swayed slightly but steadied herself. She closed her eyes for a long moment before slowly opening them again.
“…Xiu Wei.”
“Sect Leader.”
“Go down the mountain and find out what news caused Ju Canghai to retreat in such a hurry.”
“This may be our only opportunity,” Shen Shuanglian murmured.
“Yes!”
The mountain wind lifted strands of her hair as she raised a slender hand to brush them aside.
Alone, like a celestial figure removed from the mortal world, Shen Shuanglian gazed into the distance.
Her clear, cool eyes held a faint trace of sorrow.
