Chapter 27: Period

Chapter 27: Period

To be honest, Chen Shiyu wasn’t very satisfied with the food at home.

There’s just too many vegetables!

But there was nothing she could do about it. She could only quietly act like she did enjoy eating meat, subtly guiding her mother to increase the amount of meat dishes over time. Otherwise, if she suddenly asked for more meat outright, it might make her mom suspicious.

“Shishi, do you have a lot of homework today?”

“Mm, yeah, quite a bit. I’ll go over to Shen Yan’s place later to do it.”

“If you don’t know something, make sure to ask him properly. Be polite.”

“I knooow~”

Her voice was soft and obedient as she answered between bites of food, playing the role of the well-behaved daughter perfectly.

But in truth, her mind was already elsewhere—thinking about hurrying to Shen Yan’s house after dinner to play on his computer. She could do homework while playing, and if she couldn’t finish in time… well, that’s what morning self-study and her classmates’ notebooks were for.

Just as she picked up a chopstick of Shanghai greens, her hand froze mid-air.

A puzzled expression spread across her face. Why did it suddenly feel… damp back there? Did she spill some soup without noticing?

At the same time, a faint metallic scent slipped into her nose.

A bad premonition surged in her chest.

Lowering her head, she glanced beneath the table at her legs. The corner of her mouth twitched.

…This felt exactly like wetting the bed as a child.

“Mom.”

Her mother looked up from across the table. “What is it?”

Shiyu’s eyelids twitched rapidly, though her voice remained calm.

“Help me wipe the chair later…”

Her tone was steady, but her heart was already close to collapsing. She pressed her lips tightly together, trying her best to stay calm.

She had prepared for this moment: wear night pads before bed, switch to regular pads in the morning, keep a pack in her schoolbag, avoid cold drinks, bring along a thermos for warm water…

But the day came earlier than her plan.

Her breathing grew uneven, almost suffocating.

The flow was heavy, quickly staining her pant legs.

And the yang energy she used to maintain her disguise wavered dangerously—if it broke down any further, her fox ears and tail might reveal themselves right in front of her mom!

With a sharp whoosh, Chen Shiyu jumped to her feet and bolted upstairs. “I’m changing my pants!”

Her mother watched her daughter’s panicked figure and rolled her eyes.

“You’re this old and still can’t keep track of your cycle.”

From upstairs came the sound of hurried footsteps. Shiyu rushed into her third-floor bedroom, grabbed fresh underwear and a skirt, then darted back down to the second floor for a pad.

Bang!

The bathroom door slammed shut. Shiyu leaned her back against it, gasping for breath, as though that short sprint had drained every ounce of her strength.

Her legs gave out, and she slid helplessly down the door, collapsing onto the floor.

It really came… her period.

It wasn’t as painful as she’d feared. Just like in her memories, she didn’t have cramps. But the amount… wasn’t this flow way too much?!

That earlier discomfort, the dull heaviness in her abdomen—so it really was the warning sign. Next time, she’d better pay more attention. And from now on, sanitary pads were a must-have in her schoolbag.

Shiyu tried to calmly review the situation, as though she were observing herself from outside her body: a girl sitting on the floor, fox ears rising from her head, a large fluffy tail pushing against the back of her pants until they rode down into low-waist shorts.

Yet tears rolled down her cheeks without warning.

She wiped her face with her palm, but the tears just wouldn’t stop. They fell faster and faster, her ragged breaths breaking into sobs, fox ears drooping miserably against her hair.

You’re not supposed to cry…

By her “character setting,” she’d had her first period at thirteen. It had already been four or five years—she should have been used to it by now.

But memories were only memories.

When her period truly, physically arrived, Chen Shiyu felt as if the sky was collapsing, her brain ringing in waves of buzzing static.

“I… I’m a man…”

She choked on her words, rubbing at her wet face until it was smeared like a crying kitten, her voice trembling with denial.

A biting chill wrapped around her body. She rejected this reality, terrified of the day when she would completely transform into a girl… terrified she would forget she had once been a man.

And by then… she would no longer be him.

But she couldn’t just sit there crying forever.

The consciousness of the “man” inside her still held the upper hand. Even though tears streamed down, she forced herself to act.

“……”

Silently, Chen Shiyu stood. She stripped off her pants, rinsed herself with the showerhead, and—just as her memories guided her—unwrapped a pad, sticking it neatly onto her underwear.

She chose a skirt on purpose, to cover up the fox tail that had popped out during her emotional breakdown.

It was the first time in days she’d worn a skirt.

Once everything was tidied up, her tears finally stopped.

Chen Shiyu stood before the mirror.

A girl in a white dress stared back—her eyes swollen and red, shimmering with unshed tears, the corners drooping pitifully. She looked so vulnerable, so delicate, that even she herself couldn’t help but feel a fierce urge to protect that reflection.

“It’s fine, it’s fine… at least there aren’t cramps.”

She whispered, taking a deep breath, trying to soothe herself.

“The skirt is light and floaty… it actually feels pretty nice. I never liked wearing pants anyway—so tight around the legs, so uncomfortable…”

The skirt brushed down to her calves, leaving a glimpse of pale, slender shins exposed. Her fluffy fox tail hung naturally, hidden almost perfectly beneath the fabric.

—Well, aside from making her hips look bigger thanks to how thick and fluffy it was.

She grabbed a wide-brimmed sun hat from the standing coat rack—her mother’s—and put it on, hiding her droopy fox ears.

Looking at the mirror again, the usual girl in a plain school uniform who was already cute and pure enough, now wore a white dress… and somehow looked even more feminine, even prettier.

“It’s fine. As long as I keep my emotions in check, it’ll be fine.”

If her mother weren’t home, she wouldn’t have gone to all this trouble with disguises.

Knock knock

Her mother’s voice came from outside the bathroom door, tinged with worry. “How is it? Does it hurt?”

Shiyu quickly pressed a towel to her face, hiding her swollen eyes, then cracked open the door. She kept her gaze low, not daring to meet her mother’s eyes.

“All good. Nothing’s wrong.”

Her voice was light, almost casual, though her hands were clenched tightly behind her back, fingers twisting the hem of her skirt.

“Why’d you change into a skirt all of a sudden?” Her mom raised a brow in amusement. “And what’s with the hat, at night of all times?”

“I just… wanted to look nice.”

“Alright, alright~” Her mom chuckled, clearly entertained. “Still want to eat? You only had half your meal.”

“No, I’ll head to my room…”

Wait—oh no!

Her droopy ears were starting to perk back up!

She tried to force them flat again against her hair, hurriedly finding an excuse as she slipped away upstairs.

“I’ll start on my homework! Don’t come bother me unless it’s important!”

“Didn’t you say you were going to Shen Yan’s place?”

“I’ll go later!”

Right now, the only thing she wanted was to hole up in her room, alone. Absolutely no one could find out she was a fox!

And so…

Half an hour later, Chen Shiyu was still restless, fidgeting in her seat.

Her homework sat forgotten. Instead, she kept glancing back, reaching under her skirt to feel the big tail behind her.

“Why isn’t it going away yet?!”
