Book 5, Chapter 29: Blushing
I awoke. No young girl was entangled around me, but there was light snoring on the other side of the tent. It was the big man. Huh. I guess that meant Brin didn’t sleep in this tent. That brought a little smile to my face as I quietly went outside.
I was the first one up and dusk was just breaking. The fire was covered in white ash. I blew on it slowly, clearing away the ash from the coals, put some dry twigs and kindling atop it, and blew a steady stream at it until they burst aflame, adding larger and larger pieces of wood until the fire was going.
It was fun. To build a fire physically. I sat and enjoyed watching the flames find new wood, touch it lightly, quivering as if nervous, backing away, touching again, holding on, the wood darkening, and yellow and orange fire soon dancing overtop, for my eyes only.
“Just what are you doing?”
“Brin!” I sat up straighter. “Good morning. How are you?”
“Shhh! You’ll wake the men!”
“Men?”
“Tread and Morry.”
I tilted my head down a bit, smiling at her, “Oh? And where did you sleep last night, dear girl?”
She rushed over to me, taking my hands in hers, “Shush, you be quiet! You can’t tell anyone!”
“I don’t think I have to. You two were so loud last night!”
“You could hear us talking? We were whispering!” Instantly Brin became red, redder than a sunset, “Weren’t we quiet? Oh my gods.”
“I’m teasing! Just teasing you.”
She gave my hands a shake, “You’re a terrible person!”
“I’m getting you back for the spider eggs oh naughty mistress . . . of the bedroom.”
“Cayce!” she stood up, still blushing and pushing her dress down, “I’m! I’m . . . I’m going to do my toiletries. And then we’ll dress you.”
“Yes, you go do that.”
She leaned in close to my face, “And what about you and . . . you know . . . him?”
“Morry? He put me to sleep last night.”
“Did he now?”
“Ha! No, Brin, I fell asleep by the fire. He just carried me to bed.”
“What happened to ‘tomorrow we may die’?”
“Ah, rules for thee and not for me, I guess.”
“Hrmph.”
“Scoot. Go, go get your toiletries done. I’m going to sit here for a bit.”
