Chapter 207: The Gray Family’s Ambush

In the original game storyline of his previous life, the Gray family ambushed Arthur and the others. Completely unprepared, Sean MacGuire was shot in the head and killed on the spot.

Davey actually had a decent impression of the young man Sean, even if his mouth could be irritating at times.

This move against the Gray family also presented a chance to save Sean. With proper warning, Arthur was more than capable of dealing with the Gray family’s low-level guards.

At the same time, a heated argument was unfolding at the Clemens Point camp.

“Dutch, maybe we’re doing things that break the law, but we’re not killers—and we’re not anyone’s hired hands.”

“Bronte isn’t a good man. Davey told me some things about him. We shouldn’t agree to his demands.”

Hosea voiced his opposition. Earlier, Arthur had brought Trelawny back to camp, and Trelawny had delivered Bronte’s request—that Dutch deal with the Braithwaite family.

Because of what the Braithwaites had done earlier, especially selling out Bronte’s information, Bronte was furious. Yet he had no good way to deal with them directly.

Strictly speaking, the Braithwaite family and Bronte were merely business partners.

After suffering losses in his clash with Davey, it was clearly not a wise move for Bronte to personally go after the Braithwaites at this time.

So instead, Bronte wanted Dutch to do it for him.

Bronte was no stranger to Dutch. After all, Davey had come from the Van der Linde gang—or rather, by now, the upper circles of Saint Denis had all heard of the Van der Linde gang’s name.

“Alright, Hosea. There’s no need to get so worked up. I didn’t agree to anything, did I?”

“I only kept in contact with him because I thought there might be a chance to make some money. I wouldn’t betray our principles.”

“Right now, our plans involving the two families are going pretty well, aren’t they? Once we find that gold, we’ll have enough money to leave this place.”

“We’re going to succeed, Hosea. You need to trust me.”

Dutch’s words finally calmed Hosea down. He knew Bronte definitely had ulterior motives, but more importantly, the gang’s ideals hadn’t been shaken.

They had always followed a code—robbing the rich to help the poor—rather than becoming a gang that did anything purely for money, even if they desperately needed more dollars.

Seeing that Hosea no longer objected, Dutch continued arranging things.

“Arthur, Bill brought back some news. The Gray family is recruiting guards. You could take Sean, Bill, and—oh—Micah Bell. He’s been idle lately. Time he made himself useful.”

“Go check things out around Rhodes Town, see what’s going on with the Gray family hiring guards. This could be our opportunity. As for that gold, we won’t learn anything more unless we get closer to the Gray family.”

“Trust me, Arthur. I know you’ve been wronged by some of the earlier mess, but this plan—we’ll make it work. Won’t we?”

Hearing Dutch’s words, Arthur felt an uneasy sense of foreboding.

They had stolen the Braithwaite thoroughbred, expecting to make five thousand dollars, only to sell it for seven hundred.

And then there was the burning of the Gray family’s tobacco fields. All of it was starting to weigh on him.

But at this moment—right after Hosea had just argued with Dutch—this clearly wasn’t the right time to voice his doubts.

“Alright, Dutch. I’ll go with Bill and Sean… and Micah too.”

...

“Fuck, it’s already been two days. Why hasn’t Arthur shown up yet? Didn’t Davey say it would be around this time?”

“I think I’m done with this whole outdoor camping thing. Damn it… my big bed back in Saint Denis—I really miss it.”

Mac grumbled to himself. Two days earlier, following Davey’s instructions, he had come here to wait for Arthur and the others while gathering intelligence on the Gray family.

After checking things out, he confirmed that the Gray family had stationed a large number of guards around town today—clearly aimed at Arthur and his group.

“Boss Mac, they’re here.”

Hearing his employee’s report, Mac immediately perked up. Once he finished Davey’s task, he could finally head back.

Ah, those beautiful ladies of Saint Denis. Two days apart—surely they were already missing him.

On the other side, Arthur and the other three had just arrived near Rhodes Town when they saw Mac approaching with several employees.

The moment Mac spotted Micah Bell, he shot him a sharp glare, causing Micah to quickly duck behind Arthur.

Bill didn’t dare provoke Mac either.

Sean MacGuire, however, greeted him cheerfully.

“Oh, look at this—who do we have here? It’s our very own Popeye Mac. Damn, am I happy to see you.”

Sean’s mouth was always like that. He immediately slapped Mac with a nickname, thanks to the story of Mac once beating fifteen sailors on his own.

“Maybe you ought to keep that mouth of yours shut,” Mac said. “Looks like your time in prison didn’t teach you a damn thing, Sean MacGuire.”

Mac couldn’t really get angry at him. Sean’s mouth was annoying, sure, but the two of them actually got along pretty well.

“Mac, what are you doing here?” Arthur asked. “Did Davey send you?”

Arthur ignored Micah entirely. If it weren’t for Dutch, he wouldn’t have wanted anything to do with him.

Mac nodded.

“Yeah. Davey told me to wait here for you. I’ve been sitting around for two days already, and you’re only just showing up now.”

“Davey got word that the Gray family is getting ready to move against you. And the Braithwaite family too—looks like some of the things you did have already been noticed.”

“I just had my men look into it. The Gray family has set up a heavy ambush near the saloon.”

“So tell me—are you planning to head to the saloon now?”
