Chapter 191: Secured
Maine had no time to look back. He wiped the blood from his face and floored the accelerator, charging straight ahead. Yet before long, he realized something was wrong—no vehicles were chasing him. He had already braced himself for a desperate, bloody fight.
But nothing happened.
Just as the thought formed, a figure silently appeared on the roof of the car.
A pair of ice-cold eyes glanced down at Maine inside the vehicle. The figure raised a pistol and aimed it directly at Maine’s head.
Bang!
Screeech—
As the ear-splitting sound of brakes tore through the air, Tal, the special forces operative, froze for a split second before being flung forward. He absorbed the impact as he hit the ground, rolled, then sprang back up and looked ahead.
When his eyes landed on Maine in the driver’s seat, Tal narrowed his gaze.
Maine was panting heavily, his eyes bloodshot—but he was clearly still alive. That meant the shot had missed.
Still shaken, Maine reached up and touched the left side of his head. One ear was gone. There was also a fresh bullet hole in his shoulder.
Seeing the enemy right in front of him, Maine slammed the accelerator, intending to run Tal down.
“What a pain…”
Tal muttered, then activated Sandevistan again. This was the second time.
This time, he had no other plan. He went straight for Maine’s head.
In an instant, Tal was right in front of him, the muzzle pressed against Maine’s temple. Maine’s expression was still locked in rage, completely unaware of what had just happened.
Just as Tal was about to pull the trigger, a bone-chilling sensation flooded his body. A powerful sense of danger surged through him, and without the slightest hesitation, he aborted the attack and leapt backward.
That moment of hesitation was enough for Sandevistan to end.
Seeing Tal vanish from his immediate view, Maine realized what had just occurred. Yet he couldn’t understand it—if Tal had Sandevistan, why hadn’t he simply killed him?
Tal now scanned his surroundings as if facing a mortal threat, his eyes filled with tension and unease. His instincts were screaming that someone was watching from the shadows, yet he couldn’t see anyone. Combined with what had just happened, there was only one conclusion.
The enemy not only had Sandevistan, but also possessed powerful stealth tech—and terrifying strength.
Maine climbed out of the jeep.
He had figured it out. There was no way he could outrun someone like that. The only choice left was to get out and fight. At the very least, he could die with dignity.
Still, the scene before him left Maine confused. He couldn’t tell what the man in front of him was searching for.
Seeing Maine step out, Tal no longer had the luxury of worrying about the unseen presence. Gritting his teeth, he charged straight at Maine under that invisible, watchful gaze.
Bang!
What incredible strength!
Maine took the punch head-on and felt a massive force crash into his arm. His expression darkened instantly as he counterattacked.
In response, Tal spun and drove an elbow into Maine’s shoulder. The sheer power sent Maine sliding sideways.
Tal stepped in, preparing to smash Maine’s head with a single punch.
Maine’s arm suddenly split open, revealing an arm cannon.
Bang!
Tal tilted his head back just enough to evade the blast, then snapped a kick straight into Maine’s head.
Thud!
The impact sent Maine flying. He slammed hard into the vehicle, his vision blurring from the heavy blow.
Tal walked toward him slowly, his eyes still guarded as they swept the surroundings.
As Maine’s consciousness returned bit by bit, he noticed Tal’s vigilance—he was clearly wary of something. Seizing the instant Tal’s focus wavered, Maine forced himself up and drove a punch into Tal’s abdomen.
“Ugh…”
He followed with an uppercut aimed at Tal’s chin—but his fist was caught mid-swing, locked tightly in Tal’s grip.
“You’ve pissed me off, kid.”
Tal’s hand clenched violently as he twisted his wrist. His other hand moved at the same time, and then—
Bang!
Metal fragments exploded into the air.
Maine froze, staring blankly at where his right arm had been just moments before.
He didn’t have time to process it.
Tal’s next punch smashed into Maine’s face, turning it into a bloody mess.
As Maine’s body was about to be sent flying backward, Tal stepped in, grabbed his remaining arm, dropped his weight, and drove an elbow straight into Maine’s chest.
“Hah!”
The blow made Maine feel as if his heart skipped a beat. He spat out a mouthful of blood, his consciousness rapidly fading.
Tal slammed him onto the ground, then kicked, snapping Maine’s last remaining arm. He paused and scanned the area again.
There was no movement.
Tal frowned. This wasn’t how he had imagined it would end.
Lying on the ground, barely conscious, Maine slowly curled his lips into a faint smile.
If this was how it ended… his life hadn’t been so bad, had it? At least he’d left something behind.
Swish—
Crack!
“Ugh!”
Tal reacted with lightning speed, cold sweat pouring down his face as he stared at the scythe-like weapon buried deep in his shoulder. His instincts hadn’t been wrong—someone really had been watching all along.
Sparks crackled across Tal’s arm. He had sensed the attack and tried to defend himself, but his defenses were nothing more than paper in front of that power.
“Who are you?!”
“The dead don’t need to know that much.”
The man spoke indifferently. His lower face was hidden behind a mask as he extended his other hand toward Tal.
Tal activated Sandevistan instantly, trying to escape—but the man wasn’t affected at all.
“AAAAAGH!!!”
As the hand closed around Tal’s face, the stench of burning flesh filled the air. Moments later, a blackened object dropped to the ground.
“Boss, I’ve completed what you ordered.”
“Well done, Boru. Bring Maine back.”
“Understood.”
Boru nodded, then crouched down to check Maine’s injuries.
As for his origins…
He was the result of modification experiments carried out under Mudor’s supervision—secret experiments conducted within Agas City.
