Chapter 203: A Heart Turned to Ash
The lead operative glanced at Jackie, who hadn’t moved at all, then waved to both sides, signaling the others to flank.
The two men nodded and split off to the sides, while he himself crept forward from the rear toward Jackie’s position.
“I’ve breached their ICE defenses!”
Lucy’s voice rang out over the channel. Target data flooded everyone’s HUDs at once, instantly locking in the positions of all hostiles.
But that move also exposed Lucy. Militech’s netrunner immediately pinpointed her location and launched a counterattack, unleashing Daemons in reverse.
Zzzzt!
“Ah—!”
Lucy clutched her head as sparks crackled from the cyberware at the back of her skull. The hit clearly did some damage.
It was still worth it.
Jackie now had precise distances and positions on every nearby enemy. He didn’t hesitate—his foot pushed off the ground and he burst forward.
Rebecca immediately leaned out from behind the boulder.
Bang!
Blood exploded across Wilson’s face. The salty, metallic splash made his pupils contract violently. He dropped flat and rolled away on instinct, heart pounding so hard it nearly drowned out everything else.
A glance to the side showed the sniper next to him—his head completely gone.
Wilson chose not to move.
With the sniper threat gone, Jackie chopped down on the wrist of the man in front of him, then drove an elbow straight into his throat, wrenching the gun from his hands.
Drop low. Aim. Fire.
The motion was seamless. Another enemy collapsed—but Jackie paid for it with a fresh gunshot wound tearing into his body.
The last man trying to line up a shot on Jackie never got the chance. Rebecca’s round blew his head apart.
Seeing the opening, Falco didn’t hesitate. He gunned the engine and burst out from behind the boulder, racing straight toward Jackie.
At the same time, Wilson yanked open a car door and jumped inside.
“Move! Get in and finish them off!”
He slammed the door shut. To be honest, he hadn’t expected this group of edgerunners to be this hard to kill.
Watching everything unfold, Roland smiled. He was clearly pleased with Jackie and the others.
As Jackie climbed into the car, one of Wilson’s men couldn’t help asking,
“Do we still need to keep their vehicle?”
“I already answered that shit earlier! Blow them up!”
Wilson shot the man a murderous glare and slammed his hand down on the rocket launcher as he roared.
The soldier jolted, quickly shouldering the launcher and scrambling out.
“Fuck—it’s a Stinger!”
Pilar recognized the launcher model at a glance.
“A what?!”
Falco asked, still driving, completely confused.
“Tracking rockets!”
“The hell you say?!”
Whoosh—BOOM—
A massive explosion erupted. Jackie’s vehicle flipped through the air and slammed violently back to the ground.
“Nice shot! Move in—surround them!”
Wilson pumped his fist and barked the order.
Several armed men jumped out and closed in.
Jackie and the others crawled out of the wrecked car, covered in ash and dust. Flames were already licking up the chassis.
Falco, slumped in the driver’s seat, was unconscious. Lucy and Rebecca were still trapped inside.
Roland’s expression stiffened.
“Shit… overdid it.”
Without hesitation, he issued the command for the mechanical unit to intervene.
In the horrified eyes of Militech’s personnel, a mechanical squad materialized out of thin air in the open field.
Boom!
With a violent air blast, a figure appeared in front of Jackie and the others. Before anyone could react, it grabbed the car frame with one hand, tore the vehicle open, and dragged the people inside out.
【Imperial Guard Robot II Type · Angus Robot】
A humanoid close-combat machine with terrifying physical performance, specialized in raw power, defense, and speed. It carried little in the way of weapons—its body itself was both weapon and shield.
After confirming the three were alive, the Angus Robot turned its gaze toward the Militech troops who had just exited their vehicles.
Wilson saw the PROJECT emblem on its right shoulder, the towering two-and-a-half-meter frame, and the overwhelming pressure it radiated.
One thought crossed his mind.
It’s over.
Boom!
Another air blast. The Angus Robot appeared in front of their vehicle, seized the hood with one hand, and flipped the entire car with brute force.
The terrified soldiers opened fire, but it was like throwing pebbles at a tank. Not even a scratch marred the armor.
Boom!
Metal fragments flew as a steel fist punched up through the car’s undercarriage, reached into the cabin, and grabbed one man by the ankle.
“No—no—no—no—!”
Thud!
Crimson blood sprayed into the air, splattering across Angus’s silver-white body in a grotesque contrast.
Rip!
The vehicle was torn cleanly in half.
In a flash of silver, everything ended. Every soldier except Wilson had their necks snapped.
Wilson stood there trembling, staring at the killing machine, unable to move.
Roland finally exhaled and took direct control of the Angus Robot. He reached out, lifted Wilson effortlessly, adjusted his voice, and spoke:
“Mr. Wilson. A pleasure to meet you. I’m Rosen, Executive Director of PROJECT Corporation.”
“What do you want to know?”
Wilson answered without hesitation.
That caught Roland slightly off guard.
“I didn’t expect you to be so cooperative. I thought I’d need to convince you.”
Wilson forced a stiff smile as he looked at the red light glowing through the V-shaped slit on Angus’s faceplate.
