V2: Chapter 96: Mommy, Are You going to Roast The Child?
Many nobles had also come to admire the flowers.
The sky suddenly began to change color; the once clear blue sky was gradually covered by thick clouds, sunlight filtering through and casting dappled shadows. A gentle breeze blew by, bringing a damp scent, and the petals trembled slightly in the wind, as if foreshadowing the impending change.
Soon, the first rumble of thunder sounded in the sky, followed by large raindrops that began to pour down, wetting the flowers and the soil, bringing a fresh scent. The nobles, who had been strolling and chatting in the sea of flowers, or riding their horses across the grasslands, now all sought shelter from the rain.
Some nobles hurriedly ran back to their carriages, the drivers cracking their whips, urging the carriages to speed along the muddy paths; others rushed to nearby castles or manors, where spacious halls and warm fireplaces offered temporary refuge from the sudden downpour.
Liang Lin and Liang Di ran behind the group, but unfortunately, without horses, they were always a step behind.
When they reached the pavilion, they found it already packed with nobles.
"There's no other way..."
Liang Lin gritted her teeth, glancing worriedly at Carol in her arms. Then, she pulled her clothes tighter around Carol.
"Really, there's no other way, we have to go to the manor!"
They couldn't possibly drag all those nobles hiding in the pavilion out, then carry Carol and pull Liang Di inside, could they? That would be too cruel. Even with her reputation as a wicked woman, she couldn't bring herself to do such a thing!
So, Liang Lin and Liang Di ran like mad, practically flying, their feet barely touching the ground.
In an ancient castle, the nobles poured into the hall. They removed their rain-soaked cloaks and capes, and their rain-soaked hats, gathering around the fireplace to warm themselves. The hall was filled with the aroma of burning wood and the damp scent of earth, creating a warm and comfortable atmosphere.
The nobles began to chatter, their voices echoing in the spacious hall, mingling with the crackling of the fireplace to create a unique ambiance.
Some nobles discussed their experiences in the flower fields that day, while others talked about recent court gossip and interesting events. Their laughter and conversation rose and fell, creating a sense of warmth and relaxation.
Liang Lin finally let out a long sigh, collapsing wearily beside the fireplace. Her clothes were completely soaked; even though she held Carol tightly and wrapped her up close, Carol's clothes were still soaked through.
"Sigh, looks like you're going to catch a cold tomorrow~"
Liang Lin tapped the little one's nose.
Liang Di leaned in and interjected, "Probably not. I think our daughter is very healthy; she shouldn't catch a cold or fever from just a little rain."
"You're so carefree," Liang Lin rolled her eyes at her. "Carol is just a child; how can her health compare to ours? How can you say something so irresponsible?"
Liang Di, scolded by her sister, pouted and fell silent, instantly deflated like a balloon.
Among the group of nobles, one young lady stood out. She wore an elegant light blue dress, the hem embroidered with exquisite floral patterns, and her long hair cascaded over her shoulders like a waterfall, making her appear both elegant and noble.
She sat in another chair by the fireplace, holding a cup of hot tea, her gaze fixed on the pattering rain outside the window, as if deep in thought.
Liang Lin felt the woman looked vaguely familiar, as if she'd seen her somewhere before. So she kept staring at her. The woman, oblivious, kept her head propped up, gazing out the window, thus avoiding any awkward eye contact.
Raindrops tapped against the windowpane, making a crisp sound that mingled with the laughter and conversation in the hall, creating a wonderful harmony.
Outside the window, the flower field, nourished by the rain, was even more vibrant. The colorful blossoms swayed gracefully in the rain, releasing their enchanting fragrance. In the warm and comfortable hall, the nobles enjoyed a rare moment of leisure.
"Hey, Liang Di, this woman, haven't we met her somewhere before?"
Finally, after staring for a while, Liang Lin couldn't resist anymore and nudged Liang Di beside her with her elbow. "You've definitely seen her somewhere before, haven't you? She looks so familiar!"
Liang Di had been playing with Carol, holding her up to the fireplace to warm her body and drive away the chill.
Carol's little face was flushed red in the firelight, like a ripe apple. Her eyes sparkled with curiosity and excitement, fixed on the leaping flames in the fireplace, as if she wanted to rush in and explore.
Her little hand rested gently on Liang Di's, occasionally drawn closer by the warmth of the fire. Each time, a satisfied and happy smile would spread across her face, as if the whole world was enveloped in that warm firelight.
Her hair was slightly curled from the firelight, giving off a faint, smoky aroma.
Carol would occasionally turn her head, looking at Liang Di behind her with her bright, clear eyes, a radiant, innocent smile on her face. Her lips curved slightly upward, revealing a few small, white teeth, making one want to pinch her chubby cheeks.
Her little feet would occasionally tap lightly against the wall beside the fireplace, making a "thump-thump" sound. Every time this happened, she would stop, stare at her toes with her big eyes, pondering some interesting question. Then, she would refocus on enjoying the fire.
After asking that question, Liang Lin moved closer to Liang Di and Carol.
As soon as she got closer, she frowned, sniffed hard, and her frown deepened.
"Wait, what's that smell? It smells like burnt food!"
She looked closely, and then, for what seemed like the umpteenth time that day, a sharp popping sound erupted.
"Liang Di!!!"
"Are you trying to turn Carol into roast meat?!"
Good heavens, Carol's little face was almost blackened by the charcoal fire, yet she was still giggling foolishly.
Liang Lin covered her face.
Having Liang Di take care of the child was truly an extremely dangerous thing.
After hearing the other's shout, Liang Di flipped Carol over and looked at her too.
"Uh, I think it's fine. It's just that her face is a little dark, right? A little dark is quite pretty, my daughter, she's beautiful no matter what."
Liang Lin: "....."
Liang Lin chuckled, a very strange laugh.
It turns out, people really do laugh when they're extremely speechless.
Liang Lin: I just laughed for no reason.
"You've curled her hair with the burnt hair, and you still think there's nothing wrong?" Liang Lin snatched Carol from the other's hands. "Look, smell it, it even smells burnt!"
Liang Lin leaned closer to Carol and sniffed hard.
"Okay, it really does seem like it..."
There was a kind of belatedly realized, foolish beauty to it.
Liang Lin sighed.
"Alright, I'll hold Carol for now. Don't touch her. Go check that woman, haven't we seen her somewhere before?"
