V3: Chapter 40: Mama, Am I Really Your Biological Child?

"That's it."

Laura recounted her dream.

"Oh... I think I understand what you mean."

Everyone's expressions were serious; this was no joke.

Laura didn't speak, and neither did anyone else; the room fell silent for a moment.

After a long while.

"Laura, you should understand the consequences of what you're saying."

Octaville stared into Laura's eyes.

Laura could probably figure it out too. Although she still didn't know how to close that door, how to completely seal the tentacles at the bottom of the sea, Laura felt that she would most likely have to make a sacrifice.

“Um… everyone, there’s no need to think so badly. What if… what if I don’t need to do anything? What if all I need to do is go down to the seabed and take a look? We still don’t know how to seal it, right? Anything is possible, nothing is certain, don’t be so tense.”

Laura seemed to be comforting everyone, but actually, she was comforting herself.

“Yeah, you're right, everyone doesn’t need to be so serious.”

Octaville also began to comfort everyone and Laura.

“The most important thing now is to figure out what the key is and how to seal it, isn’t it? Now that Laura has given us clues, we should investigate even more.”

These words eased the atmosphere slightly.

“Yeah, Octaville is right.”

Liang Lin didn’t know what to say, so she could only agree with Octaville to ease the tension.

Liang Di, however, kept staring at Laura, making Laura feel a little uncomfortable.

"W-what's wrong?"

"Nothing."

Liang Di looked away, her tone indifferent.

"It's just that since you woke up, you seem different. I wouldn't say your face is different, but rather... some aspects of your demeanor are different."

Laura didn't refute this.

When she first woke up, she glanced at herself in the mirror while Gladys was looking, and indeed, the person in the mirror didn't look like her anymore. It wasn't that her face was different—it was still the same face, it just.... felt different.

"Maybe... it's because I remembered some things."

Just as Liang Di and Octaville had said, Philomena was growing increasingly fair and delicate.

Today was Philomena's one-month birthday. The baby had fully developed, and even some hair had grown in. It was silver-white, exactly the same color as Liang Di's hair.

"Her hair is so beautiful," Carol said, holding Philomena in her arms with obvious affection.

"It's the opposite color to mine, just like Mommy's hair. I think I look more like Mama, so my little sister will definitely look more like Mommy, and then we'll be balanced."

Liang Lin tapped Carol's head.

“No, you look more like your Mommy, except your hair color is like mine. Look at your eyes, they're like sapphire blue, exactly like your Mommy's, and your face shape is similar too.”

After hearing this, Carol carried Philomena to the mirror, looked at herself, then at Liang Lin and Liang Di behind her, then back at herself again, and then back at Liang Lin and Liang Di.

“Eh...."

She drawled.

“It really does seem like it, I look more like Mommy.”

Carol pinched Philomena’s cheek, “Then you should look more like Mama, so we can be balanced~”

Liang Di laughed, “Carol, do you have OCD? It doesn’t matter which one you look like.”

At this moment, Philomena in Carol’s arms woke up, opening her big, watery eyes. They were crimson eyes, exactly like Liang Lin’s.

“Hmm!”

Carol stared intently at Philomena.

“I knew it! She really does look exactly like Mama.”

Liang Lin, hearing this, leaned down as well. “Really? Hmm... it doesn’t matter who she looks like. Anyway, it’s good that Philomena looks like me and Liang Di; we’re both quite good-looking.”

“Oh… Mama is really narcissistic.” Carol pouted.

Philomena was quiet, unlike Carol when she was little. She just blinked her big eyes, staring at her family members, neither crying nor fussing, nor constantly waving her arms.

“Huh? Why isn’t she moving at all? Is she sick? She was still motionless before because she was young, but why isn’t she moving at all now?”

In Liang Lin’s memory, all babies should be as lively as Carol, always laughing and joking, not crying so much.

But Philomena? She doesn’t cry, fuss, or laugh.

How strange.

“I remember when Carol was little, she loved to hold her little hands up in the air and shake them constantly. Why isn’t she shaking her hands anymore? Is she sick?”

Liang Lin touched Philomena’s forehead.

“Every child is different. This is just a quiet personality; you can tell from a child’s appearance.”

Liang Di tidied up the papers on the table, neatly stacking the pile together and placing it in a corner. Then she stood up and stretched.

“Phew~ Finally finished tidying up the shop.”

Even during her postpartum (after birth) period, Liang Di didn’t slack off in managing the family business. She remained very busy every day, but she always made time to spend with Carol and Philomena, and occasionally she would spend time with Liang Lin.

Liang Lin was similar; she was often away from home, accompanying Hilary, Octaville, Gladys, and Laura on their investigation into the tentacles. However, she could stay away for a week and then another week, like going on a business trip and then taking a long vacation afterward.

She always had time to spend with the child, and besides, Carol was always at home with Philomena, so the child wasn't lonely.

"Sigh."

Liang Lin patted Carol's head. "If only you had been born in a more peaceful time, I could have been with you every day when you were little, instead of sometimes having to take you to the battlefield."

These things were so long ago that Carol had completely forgotten them, and hearing this, she was somewhat surprised.

"What?! When I was little, you took me to the battlefield?!"

Just thinking about it terrified her.

How come I wasn't shot through the heart by an enemy arrow?

"Mama, weren't you afraid I'd suddenly fall off the horse and be trampled to death, or that an enemy arrow would pierce my chest?"

Carol wondered if she wasn't Liang Lin's biological daughter.
