V3: Chapter 45: Trial
Gladys was pulled forcefully by Laura, forced to turn around, only to see the tentacles about to touch their faces.
"Gah..."
Gladys's eyes rolled back, almost fainting.
Don't think Laura had become braver; actually, she had fainted time and time again while being dragged along by Gladys, only managing to run this far by being pulled along.
The tentacles were getting closer and closer.
Closer and closer.
"Tower Master!"
"Tower Master, ahhhhhhh!"
Gladys screamed in terror.
But Octaville didn't appear, not even a shadow.
"Octaville!!!"
"Octaville, ahh ... "
They've even started calling out the name of the great Tower Master without thinking.
But Octaville still hasn't appeared.
The tentacles suddenly attacked, and Gladys stumbled, pulling Laura aside to dodge.
Thump!
The two crashed heavily to the ground, face down, mouths full of sand and dirt.
"Waaaaah!"
Gladys seemed somewhat deranged. Now, she wasn't sure if Octaville would come to their rescue. If she really didn't…
Gladys stared at the tentacles swarming in front of her.
That would be terrible.
Will we die here?
Gurgle, gurgle...
The slimy sound echoed in the dark, damp atmosphere, like a premonition. Tentacles seemed to emerge from the abyss, attacking fiercely, carrying an invisible pressure and a putrid stench.
Gladys's heart raced, and she clung tightly to Laura beside her, desperately trying to dodge to the side. However, this time, her reaction was a little too slow.
A tentacle grazed her arm, and a sharp pain instantly spread, blood dripping down her arm and seeping into the soil. The sensation was nauseating, as if she were being torn apart by something soft and slimy.
"What a disgusting sound..." she couldn't help but mutter to herself, but now was clearly not the time for complaints.
At this moment, Gladys knew that Octaville wouldn't be by their side. Whether by accident or for other reasons, she had to face this terrifying being alone.
Taking a deep breath, Gladys stood up shakily, a flame of determination igniting within her. "Magic..." she murmured, trying to make her voice sound more resolute.
"Laura, I'll take care of it." She turned to Laura, though her heart was filled with unease.
“But... are you really sure you can do it? I...” Laura’s voice was weak, her eyes filled with worry.
“I… I think I can handle it.” Gladys managed a weak smile, though she wasn’t very confident.
“Hoo~” Gladys took another deep breath, trying to calm her turmoil. She raised her hands, feeling the subtle change in the air, as if in response to her resolve. The surrounding light also began to fluctuate, as if cheering on her decision.
She stood firm, the air around her trembling subtly under her will, as if brewing some powerful force. Gladys closed her eyes, countless ancient incantations and symbols flashing through her mind, silently reciting the magic she possessed. As her thoughts flowed, the surrounding temperature gradually decreased, condensing into a powerful energy.
“Come on!” she encouraged herself, watching the tentacles lunge again, mercilessly. Her fingers trembled slightly, but her eyes grew even more resolute.
“You want to defeat me? What makes you think you can!” Gladys mustered her courage and roared.
The instant the tentacles drew near, she abruptly opened her arms, channeling all her magic power, unleashing a dazzling beam of light that struck the terrifying monster.
The tentacle monster let out a low roar, its massive body slowly moving forward. Trees snapped and cracked as it passed, the entire forest trembling as if terrified by its presence. Leaves fell like innocent victims, scattering across the ground, adding to the eerie atmosphere.
Yet, Gladys's resolve remained firm.
Despite the overwhelming fear, she did not retreat. She closed her eyes, took a deep breath, and gently raised her hands, attempting to connect with the unseen force. She could feel the magical fluctuations in the air—a harbinger of casting a spell—a powerful connection pulsating at her fingertips.
In that instant, Gladys let out a low shout, her eyes snapping open, a defiant light flashing within them. Two dazzling beams of energy shot from her hands, striking directly at the core of the tentacle monster. This wasn't a direct physical attack, but a focused fusion of spirit and magic, an attempt to shake the monster's very essence.
The tentacle monster roared in agony, its fury and terror mingling, its tentacles flailing wildly in the air, clearly greatly disturbed.
But the monster didn't fall; instead, it became even more ferocious, its tentacles lunging at Gladys like living snakes, carrying an oppressive and destructive force.
Facing the surging tide of tentacles, Gladys displayed astonishing agility. She flashed, like a ghost, weaving through the tentacles, each movement perfectly timed to avoid the attacks.
Her movements were light and swift, seemingly blending into the night, elusive and unpredictable. The surrounding environment became her best ally; trees, rocks, and other obstacles provided cover, further weakening the monster's offensive.
However, seeing the tentacle monster's relentless attacks, Gladys decided to unleash her full power.
She closed her eyes again, took a deep breath, and traced complex arcs in the air with her hands. The surrounding air began to fluctuate violently, countless tiny forces converging at her fingertips to form a suffocating energy field.
Suddenly, a blinding bolt of lightning ripped through the night sky, striking the tentacle monster's head. Immediately afterward, the ground trembled, and a powerful surge of earth elemental energy erupted from the earth, forming several sharp stone spikes that pierced several of the monster's tentacles like blades. Blood mingled with the soil, emitting a pungent odor.
But the tentacle monster did not retreat; instead, it grew even more frenzied. Its roar was deafening, shaking the entire swamp, even the earth responding to its fury.
Gladys realized that this battle was not merely a contest of strength, but also a battle of wills. Although her legs were weak with fear, she still took a deep breath, bringing her mind to an unprecedented state of calm, and began to chant an ancient incantation.
As the incantation was chanted, the surrounding space seemed to freeze, time slowed down, and the tentacle monster's movements became sluggish, with each tentacle swinging with extraordinary difficulty.
