V3: Chapter 55: The Tower Master is Injured
The creature's mouth moved, as if it were about to say something.
However, the voice was so faint, like a mosquito's buzz, that Octaville couldn't hear it at all.
So, she had to lean closer to try and decipher what it was saying.
But, the next second.
A piercing scream exploded in her ears.
Behind her, Laura also let out a scream.
Octaville was startled and turned around abruptly.
She saw it—a pair of wings.
Laura's pure white wings were covered with countless eyes, some open, some closed, shimmering with an eerie light, both sacred and terrifying, inspiring awe while simultaneously sending a wave of indescribable nausea through her.
Those pure white wings, originally a symbol of angels, were flawless, like the purest snowflakes. However, at this moment, her wings seemed to be corrupted by some unknown force. Eyes, like living creatures, writhed on her wings, emanating an indescribable, eerie aura.
Some eyes were tightly closed, like sleeping infants, revealing innocence and purity. Others were half-open, revealing cunning and mystery. Still others were fully open, their pupils flashing with a cold light. The presence of these eyes made Laura's wings both sacred and terrifying. She was no longer a simple girl, but something beyond imagination.
And Laura herself underwent a tremendous change in this transformation.
Her eyes, originally ordinary golden yellow, were now pure white, like two flawless pearls, or two bottomless, icy pools, making it impossible to fathom her true thoughts.
These pure white eyes made Laura's demeanor strange. She was no longer the timid girl she once was; within her lay an indescribable sorrow and loneliness. It was as if she had been forced to shoulder some heavy mission, compelled to distance herself from the world.
Laura's transformation triggered a violent reaction in her surroundings. The creatures of the forest, sensing the powerful aura emanating from her, scattered and hid, afraid to approach the inn.
Octaville also abruptly closed her eyes, blinded by the sudden beam of light.
"Hiss~"
She gasped sharply; her eyes were incredibly painful, a dense, throbbing pain, like being pricked by needles or burned by fire.
A normal beam of light would never cause this pain; this pain felt like being under some kind of magic spell.
Octaville covered her eyes, only to find tears streaming down her face, a large, wet patch.
She even wondered if this was blood; had she gone blind?
Octaville struggled to open her eyes, trying to see if the tears on her hand were clear or bright red blood. However, she couldn't open her eyes no matter what she did. Even if she did, everything was blurry—but thankfully, not a blood-red blur, but a silvery-white blur.
"Gladys! Laura! You two be careful, the monster…"
Gladys murmured.
"Lord Tower Master, that monster… it turned into a pool of blood."
Ah…
That piercing scream just now, it was from that monster.
Octaville's eyes were in so much pain that she hadn't paid attention to the monster behind her. Now, she suddenly remembered hearing a terrible scream.
"Is it safe now?"
Because she couldn't open her eyes, everything around her was unknown and unfamiliar. Octaville didn't dare to draw any conclusions; she feared she was under the monster's illusion, experiencing auditory hallucinations.
Gladys nodded (Octaville couldn't see either), and asked, "Lord Tower Master, why are your eyes closed? Is... is the monster some strange ability? Do we all have to keep our eyes closed?"
Thinking this, Gladys quickly closed her eyes as well, patting Laura beside her as if touching a blind person's skirt.
The next second.
Thud!!!
Okay, she crashed heavily to the ground, her wings disappearing.
The loud noise startled Gladys, making her open her eyes.
"Laura, Laura, are you alright?!"
Gladys crouched down and shook Laura's shoulders vigorously, but Laura remained unmoved, her eyes tightly closed, just like Octaville's.
Octaville couldn't see anything, only hear the sound. Hearing Gladys excitedly calling Laura's name, her heart tightened.
"What happened to Laura?"
Gladys looked at Laura, who was lying unconscious on the ground, then at Octaville, whose eyes were closed and tears were streaming down her face. She felt a wave of despair wash over her; the only one with open eyes was Gladys.
"I don't know what happened either. Just a moment ago, she was radiating power, wings outstretched, and now she's collapsed on the ground. I can't wake her up no matter what I do. I even slapped her, but she still won't wake up."
Octaville's lips twitched slightly. Gladys remained as indifferent as ever.
"Okay, I understand."
Octaville stood up and tried to open her eyes again, but all she saw was a white blur. She couldn't see anything clearly and could only close her eyes again.
“Sigh,” she sighed, “Gladys, my eyes might be injured. You'll have to take care of Laura and me now. How's your magic recovery? If it's almost recovered, start drawing a teleportation magic circle on the ground now, and we'll go back.”
Gladys felt like a vengeful spirit, but there was nothing she could do. This place was indeed not safe to linger; there was still a pool of monster blood on the ground.
Before drawing the teleportation circle, Octaville had Gladys put all the fruits back into her pocket.
“Now we know more or less what these fruits are for. We have to thank this monster.”
She just didn't know what the monster had done to Laura when it growled, causing Laura to spread her wings again.
This was the second time Octaville had seen Laura spread her wings; the first time was when Liang Di hypnotized Laura.
What about this time? What terrifying thing had Laura seen that triggered her?
Octaville glanced over, but she didn't see anything then.
After Gladys finished drawing the magic circle and returned to the Magic Tower, Octaville sent her to find Liang Lin and Liang Di.
This led to the scene where Gladys wailed and cried, "The Tower Master is injured!"
