Prologue: Another spirit?

Previous Chapter Next Chapter

The sky above Tengu City wasn't always a canvas of peace. For its inhabitants, the endless blue is a convenient lie, a curtain that conceals the fragility of the world.

More than thirty years ago, the world learned that space itself could be broken.

"Spacequakes" became the new metric for fear, and although humanity learned to rebuild, it never learned to forget.

Recently, the currents of fate had been turbulent. The events on Arbi Island had left an indelible mark: the frenzied dance of the Yamai sisters, the hurricane of power that nearly consumed everything in its path, had been sealed.

Peace seemed to have returned to the Itsuka residence, but in the shadows of the stratosphere, rest was a luxury no one could afford.

On the bridge of the Fraxinus airship, the silence was merely the prelude to the storm. The monitors, which usually displayed stable readings of the vital signs of the already known Spirits, flickered violently.

—Fluctuations in space-time detected! Coordinates 35.6 degrees North, Tengu residential sector! —operator Shiizaki's voice cut through the air like a whip.

Immediately, the atmosphere changed. Ratatoskr's staff moved with mechanical precision. Data analysis began cascading across the holographic screens in the center of the room.

"A Spacequake? This... the scale is too small," commented Kannazuki, the second-in-command, with unusual seriousness. "The spiritual pressure waves aren't expanding outward; they're concentrating at a single focal point. It's a clean manifestation."

"Confirmed! A Spirit has appeared!" Mikimoto shouted, adjusting his glasses as his fingers flew across the keyboard. "But wait... these levels... It's impossible!"

On the main screen, a comparative bar graph appeared out of nowhere. On the left, the historical record of "Princess" (Tohka Yatogami), the standard of pure destructive power. On the right, a crimson line ascended at breakneck speed until it equaled, and even briefly touched, Tohka's record.

—Level of spiritual power... Equivalent to Princess? —a voice murmured from the throne of command.

Kotori Itsuka, the commander of Ratatoskr, gritted her teeth, causing her signature lollipop to bob from side to side in her mouth. Her black ribbons, the ones that marked her "commander mode," seemed to vibrate with tension.

A Spirit with such a magnitude of energy was not just an anomaly; it was a walking calamity whose purposes were unknown.

However, Ratatoskr was not the only organization observing the emergence of this new existence.

"AST (Anti-Spirit Team) unit detections!" Hinako reported. "They've deployed three full squadrons. They're launching an immediate interception raid."

In the long-range cameras, the light trails of the expanded Territories could be seen.

The AST mages, equipped with their CR-Units, rushed toward the epicenter of the disturbance like moths to a flame that promised to incinerate them. For them, dialogue was impossible, only the eradication of "the disaster."

"Those idiots from the AST..." Kotori grumbled, crossing her legs. "As always, they either have no idea what they're up against. If they try to contain an Upper Class power with guerrilla tactics, they'll only succeed in wiping the city off the map."

The screen showed the deployment of enemy forces.

It wasn't just the AST; long-range sensors were detecting suspicious activity on DEM Industries' satellites. Isaac Westcott's organization was surely salivating at the prospect of capturing a Spirit of that caliber.

Kotori watched the chaos unfold on the monitors. Her mind raced.

They had just dealt with Kaguya and Yuzuru, and their resources were stretched to the limit. The appearance of such a powerful Spirit at this precise moment was, in every sense, extremely problematic. Especially given how powerful it clearly was.

Who are you? Kotori thought, staring at the silhouette of a woman in crimson, Chinese-style clothing who was beginning to fight in the center of the impact zone. Are you just another victim who became something you didn't want to be...or something more?

The conflict was inevitable. If the AST continued its murderous attacks, the Spirit would be forced to respond. And if the Spirit responded with too much power, thousands would die.

As was gradually evident on the screen.

The only way to stop a disaster of that magnitude wasn't with high-density bullets or energy walls. It was with something much more fragile and, at the same time, much more resilient.

Kotori sighed, closing her eyes for a brief second to find her center.

“This is getting out of hand because of brute force,” he finally said, with a calmness that chilled the blood of those present. “We cannot allow the AST to take control of the situation, and we cannot let DEM get its hands on that power. We need our best weapon. The only one that can neutralize an atomic bomb with a single word.”

"Connect me to the surface," Kotori ordered.

"But Commander, he's still recovering from the events on the island..." Kannazuki interjected.

"I don't care. The world won't wait for us to catch our breath. If we don't act now, Tengu will be reduced to ashes before sunset. Call in the main asset. Call in our bridge to salvation."

The order was carried out. The signal traveled from the craft hidden in the clouds to a small device in a school uniform pocket.

In this world, there are beings that can destroy civilization with a mere blink. Creatures born of chaos, clothed in light and shadow, whose cries translate into explosions that tear the earth apart.

Against them, man has built walls, forged swords of technology, and shed blood in the name of survival.

But history has shown that hatred only breeds more emptiness.

When physical strength fails, when science gives up, and when hope seems like a whisper drowned out by the wailing sirens... only one path remains. A path that defies logic and places the fate of humanity on the shoulders of a single young man.

He is not a warrior, he is not a genius, nor does he possess a heart of steel.

He is simply someone who dares to extend a hand where others only know how to pull the trigger.

Faced with this new threat, this spirit whose power rivals that of the Sword Princess herself, there is only one man capable of changing the ending of this story.

That man is... Shido Itsuka.
