Chapter 40: The Great Cause
Walking down the corridor of the Phantasm Girl dormitory, Yellow spoke up.
"By the way, don't you guys have a commander?"
The atmosphere froze instantly.
"...What of it?"
"Indeed, we once had one. However, since they were killed in the line of duty, there have been no volunteers for the position, so it has remained vacant!"
"I see."
"......"
I recalled something a senior officer had told me once.
'Listen. Heroes Estoc are "Commander-killers." There are some pretty nasty rumors out there. If you want a long life, don't get anywhere near them.'
"......"
"We're here!"
"Finally, we can drag that shut-in out."
Noise immediately began pounding on the door.
"Hey! Time to work!"
"Is... is it okay to act like that? Besides, I didn't hear anything about her being a shut-in. Will she really be of any use?"
Yellow asked, uncertainty evident in her voice.
"There is no need for concern! She is someone who stays prepared to move with maximum efficiency at any time. Isn't that right, Lancelot!!"
The only response was silence.
"Very well, then!!"
"Step back!" I was told, and as I moved about a meter away...
A massive crash echoed through the hall.
King had kicked the door down with all her might.
"Eeeek!?"
Along with a high-pitched, adorable shriek, a girl appeared, wearing what was clearly training attire.
"..."
Her physical stature was what struck me first. Even sitting down, it was obvious she stood well over 180 centimeters. Her toned abs evoked an image of a prime I had never seen, and weapons that bore a dull, well-worn luster sat enshrined on the wall.
But that wasn't what truly surprised me.
"K-King..."
The way Lancelot looked at King was clearly filled with fear.
"Lancelot, you may be feeling guilty toward me. If so, fight with us and fulfill our great cause."
King’s regal command filled the room. She didn’t give even an inch of room for a response.
"We're leaving!" King turned on her heel and headed back the way we came.
The next day, Lancelot was there.
"The cast is assembled! Now... let us depart, Master Amane!!"
And so, our expedition began.
