Volume 1 Chapter 53: Heatstroke
Trapped In Paradise
Volume 1 Chapter 53: Heatstroke
“It’s so hot...”
Standing beneath the shade of a tree, Ning Chu fanned himself with one of the promotional flyers, yawning every now and then.
Street promotion really wasn’t an easy job.
His social skills were average, and he wasn’t particularly outgoing or shameless. If not for Wen Yang’s protagonist aura, they probably wouldn’t have been able to complete today’s part-time job at all.
Ning Chu had already figured out his role in the group...
Support!
“Wen Yang! Let’s take a break, okay?”
“Sure.”
Wen Yang stretched as he returned to the shade, casually found a place to sit, and accepted the bottle of ice water Ning Chu handed him. He gulped down half of it in one go.
“Let’s quit after we finish today, okay?” Ning Chu handed him a packet of tissues. “I’m not good at this kind of thing either. I’m just holding you back.”
He didn’t actually feel guilty about being dead weight. The main problem was that the sun was brutally intense, and temperatures these past few days had been approaching forty degrees Celsius. There was barely any breeze, and even beneath the shade, he felt dizzy and light-headed.
It was even hotter than during military training!
Wen Yang wiped the sweat from his forehead and turned toward Ning Chu, hesitating.
“Then... why don’t you go back? This street-promotion job actually pays pretty well.”
“...”
How could he possibly agree to that?!
Ning Chu sighed softly.
“Forget it. I’ll stay with you. At least it won’t be as boring with two people.”
It really would have been much more comfortable staying in the dorm with the air conditioner on and playing games.
He rubbed his temples with a headache, only to hear Wen Yang ask tentatively:
“I do know of a part-time job indoors with air conditioning. The pay is pretty good too. Why don’t you try it?”
“I’m not exactly short on money...”
“If you go, I’ll definitely go with you.”
Indoor air conditioning, plus the chance to continue keeping the vixen from seducing Wen Yang...
Compared with enduring forty-degree heat outside, even if the indoor job was terrible, it couldn’t possibly be worse than this, right?!
“Sure! What kind of job?”
“You agreed?” Wen Yang’s eyes lit up, but he quickly composed himself and nodded in an indifferent tone. “A waiter. I’ll take you to have a look tomorrow. They’re desperately short-staffed because they’re running a promotion, so we’ll discuss the pay when we get there.”
“A waiter? I’m actually pretty good at that.”
Ning Chu didn’t notice anything unusual. His eyes narrowed into a cheerful smile. He had worked as a waiter before, so at least he had some experience.
It might be fairly busy, but at least there would be air conditioning. During non-peak hours, he might even be able to sit down, play with his phone, and take a break.
After thinking for a moment, he also confirmed that the novel contained no plotlines involving waiters.
“Then I’ll contact the boss directly and set it up for tomorrow morning? We can start working as soon as we get there?”
“You’re in such a hurry?”
“They’re short-staffed.”
Ning Chu nodded his little head and was about to get up to buy another bottle of water when he suddenly felt dizzy.
His legs went weak, and he collapsed to his knees.
Wen Yang stared blankly at the small, pert backside facing him before hurriedly getting to his feet and helping him up.
“What’s wrong?”
“Probably... a little heatstroke.”
Wen Yang helped Ning Chu to his feet, looked around, and spotted a pharmacy across the street.
“Let’s go inside and rest for a while. You can take some medicine and drink some water.”
“Okay.”
His limbs felt weak and powerless. His chest felt tight, his heart was pounding, and his face was frighteningly hot.
Ning Chu’s vision was blurry. His eyes were only half open, and almost all of his weight was leaning against Wen Yang. He was panting when he suddenly felt his feet leave the ground.
The sudden loss of balance immediately jolted him more awake. His eyes widened, only to discover that Wen Yang was carrying him in his arms.
Gasp!
I’m being carried by Wen Yang?!
Before he could even protest, Wen Yang had already started running.
The violent movement startled Ning Chu into wrapping his arms around Wen Yang’s neck and burying his face firmly against Wen Yang’s chest.
Holy crap! Why are you running so fast?!
“Stop! Stop! Slow down! Slow down! Ah!!”
Ning Chu was so frightened that his mind went completely blank. His eyes were squeezed shut, and he couldn’t stop himself from crying out.
Aside from when he had been an infant, he had never been carried in someone’s arms while being run around like this.
It was terrifying!
It seemed to happen in an instant. Only when Wen Yang slowly set him down did Ning Chu shakily open his eyes.
They had already reached the pharmacy.
He was practically on the verge of tears, the corners of his eyes glistening. He looked up at Wen Yang in front of him, his lips trembling.
“I-I was so scared...”
Seeing Ning Chu’s pitiful expression, the worry on Wen Yang’s face immediately softened, and he gently reassured him, “I was just worried about you.”
Ning Chu took a moment to catch his breath, then suddenly realized that both his hands were still tightly gripping Wen Yang’s collar.
He quickly let go, pretended nothing had happened, and shuffled his butt toward the edge of the chair to put a little distance between himself and Wen Yang.
The pharmacist came over as well.
“What happened?”
“He might have heatstroke.”
“Have him drink some Huoxiang Zhengqi oral liquid.” The pharmacist opened the pharmacy’s glass door to improve ventilation, then directed the fan toward Ning Chu. “He just needs to rest for a while. In weather like this, it’s easy to get heatstroke if you’re not careful. You should buy a few extra bottles to keep on hand.”
“Okay.”
Only then did Wen Yang relax. He eagerly followed the pharmacist to the shelves to get the medicine.
Ning Chu, however, didn’t look particularly happy.
The heatstroke had left him dizzy and light-headed, but what he found even harder to accept was that he had once again ended up having intimate physical contact with Wen Yang.
Being carried in his arms...
He seriously suspected that if this kept happening, he might become Wen Yang’s girlfriend before he even finished turning into a girl.
Forget waiting for the plot to happen. At this rate, he’d have to go get himself a membership card at a proctology clinic first.
“Ning Chu, drink your medicine.”
“Mm... Ugh! That tastes awful!”
“Medicine is never supposed to taste good.” Wen Yang wanted to laugh at his miserable expression. “You knew to prepare water for me, so why didn’t you bring a bottle for yourself?”
“I didn’t really feel that thirsty...”
“Here, drink the rest of this half bottle first.”
Ning Chu’s mouth was still filled with the strange taste of the Huoxiang Zhengqi liquid. He took the bottle and gulped down the rest, finally washing the awful flavor away.
But immediately afterward, his expression froze.
He suddenly realized something.
Wen Yang had already drunk from this bottle, hadn’t he?!
There might still be his saliva on it...
Gross...
“You’re not thinking about something like an indirect kiss, are you?” Wen Yang teased with a smile when he saw Ning Chu staring blankly at the bottle.
“Straight men don’t think about things like that.” Having recovered somewhat after taking the medicine, Ning Chu immediately fired back. “Looks like you’re a little bent, huh?”
“...”
Ning Chu’s expression became even more blank.
Hey, hey, hey! Say something! Don’t just go silent!
“Just judging by appearances, you’re obviously the more bent one.”
Only then did Ning Chu breathe a sigh of relief.
Thank goodness Wen Yang was still teasing him. Otherwise, he really might have started wondering whether this guy was interested in him.
That made no sense!
After all, Wen Yang had so many beautiful girls pursuing him. How could a man like Ning Chu possibly compete with those seductive girls?
“You rest here for a while. I’m going back outside.” Wen Yang straightened up and looked toward the street outside the pharmacy. “I’ll stay right by the entrance.”
He had learned to make a point of staying within Ning Chu’s line of sight.
That way, Ning Chu wouldn’t end up like he had at the amusement park, frantically searching everywhere for him with an expression that looked as though he was about to cry.
“Okay.”
