V3: Chapter 62: Sacrifice
Laura woke up, and after waking, she remained silent for a long time.
She remembered everything.
She could restore peace to the world, but the price was a near-death experience. She might die in the blink of an eye—or rather, a 99% chance of death.
"Laura, are you feeling unwell? You look so haggard. You're hardly talking anymore."
Gladys remained carefree, eating, drinking, and playing, not taking anything to heart. She sat by Laura's bedside, eating blood clots.
"Is this a side effect? It's made you so quiet."
Laura looked up at Gladys, sighed, and looked away.
"Gladys, there are some things you'll never understand."
Her tone was filled with melancholy and profound sadness.
Gladys: "....."
She chewed and chewed.
"Laura, why do you talk like those old people? You always beat around the bush. Just say what you mean. We've lived together for so long, we're good friends, what can't we just say directly?"
Laura shook her head again.
"You wouldn't understand how I feel right now."
Gladys stopped chewing and looked at Laura strangely.
"You won't tell me what happened, you won't tell me the details, how am I supposed to know how you feel? How am I supposed to understand?"
That made sense.
But, the distraught Laura didn't want to tell anyone. She was afraid someone would betray her and tell Octaville directly.
What would Octaville choose then?
Faced with the lives of thousands, tens of millions of people, and my life, what would Octaville choose?
Laura might seem naive, but she wasn't stupid. She knew that someone like Octaville, even if it meant sacrificing her own life to save the entire continent, would do so without hesitation.
Therefore… Laura thought that if Octaville knew about this, she would definitely force her to go to the ocean depths.
She didn't want that to happen. The ocean was damp, cold, and fraught with the constant threat of monsters and death. She didn't want to go.
But if I don't go, what would happen to the continent?
The monsters were multiplying, and sooner or later they would threaten the people on the land.
Just thinking about these things made Laura's mind race.
Even at night, Laura tossed and turned, unable to sleep. The first two days were fine; Gladys was stubborn and didn't mind missing a couple of nights' sleep. But Laura's sleepless nights continued for several days, leaving Gladys with large dark circles under her eyes.
When Liang Lin and Liang Di saw Gladys, they were startled by her appearance; she looked completely drained and incredibly weak.
"What happened to you? Is Octaville's method that terrible? She's exhausted you like this."
Gladys weakly shook her head.
"It's not Tower Master."
"Then what is this…" Liang Lin looked her up and down.
Gladys spoke weakly, "It's because of Laura…"
"!!!"
Upon hearing this, Liang Lin and Liang Di's eyes widened instantly.
"What?! You two have already did it? Well, you two have been living in the same room for so long, it's understandable that feelings would develop..." Liang Lin's mouth moved quickly, the words tumbling out in one breath.
Gladys quickly shook her head.
"What?! We're not having an affair! We're just ordinary friends, really good friends!"
Gladys's eagerness to argue only made Liang Lin and Liang Di's eyes look even more suspicious.
"Really....?"
Gladys shouted, "Laura hasn't been sleeping well these past two days. She keeps tossing and turning, and I sleep right next to her. I hear her sighing and groaning every time, and she wakes me up several times a night!"
"Oh..."
Liang Lin and Liang Di shrugged, as if they were disappointed.
Gladys: "?"
Why are they looking at me with such pity?!
"I don't know what Laura's hallucinating again. She's been like this for the past two days since she fainted. It seems... quite worrying."
Although she complained about Laura, deep down Gladys was still concerned about her.
"Hmm..."
Liang Lin and Liang Di exchanged a glance.
Laura seems to have many secrets, and they might even be related to the sea monster, which could be the key to breaking the deadlock. It's only right that the two of them check on the girl.
"Okay, then I'll go over this afternoon and ask her, check on her, and see what's wrong with her."
Liang Lin patted Gladys's shoulder. "Then you don't need to work here anymore. Go back and rest. The other maids can take over your work."
With just one sentence, Gladys was moved to tears.
"Miss Liang Lin, you're so kind. I shouldn't have thought you were so fierce before. You're simply the best lady in the world!"
Liang Lin: "?"
"So, you thought I was fierce before?"
Her tone wasn't very friendly.
Gladys's smile froze on her face. Whether it was from staying up late and her mind being foggy, or from being too excited and confused, her true feelings had simply slipped out.
"Uh... Miss Liang Lin..."
Feeling impending doom, the vampire princess shed tears of regret.
It wasn't that bad. Liang Lin wasn't angry; she knew she did appear fierce. However, she hadn't expected to frighten the girl in front of her to cry.
"Alright, alright, you should go and rest. I'll go talk to Laura."
Liang Lin was too lazy to comfort her, waving her hand and sending Gladys away.
In the afternoon, Liang Lin and Liang Di found Laura sitting in the back garden, lost in thought.
"Laura, it's still so cold. You're dressed so lightly, aren't you afraid of catching a cold?"
Liang Lin went up to her first.
Laura, who had been lost in thought, jolted upon hearing these words, turning around to see two familiar faces.
"Ah, Miss Liang Lin, Miss Liang Di."
Laura hadn't slept well either, and her complexion wasn't good. Seeing that it was the two young ladies, she immediately stood up.
"Laura, please sit down. You don't need to stand up."
