V3: Chapter 63: Are You Afraid of Death?
"Gladys said you've been troubled by something lately?"
Liang Lin sat down beside Laura.
"If you have something on your mind, just tell me. Hmm... I think I can probably help you solve it."
Liang Lin always spoke with such confidence, and she wasn't just boasting; she genuinely believed she could solve it. That was probably just her innate confidence.
"...."
Laura remained unusually silent.
Liang Di gently patted Liang Lin's shoulder, leaned close to her ear, and whispered, "If you ask her so directly, of course she won't tell you. Who can so easily reveal their secrets?"
Liang Lin scratched her head in confusion and shrugged.
"Then I really don't know how to ask. You ask her, I'm really not good at this."
Liang Lin gave in.
Liang Di sat down next to Laura. Her voice was as gentle as ever, without a trace of Liang Lin's sharpness.
"Laura, I know everyone has their own worries, but if you keep them bottled up inside, it will only make you feel bad."
"By the way, Gladys told us all this. Gladys is very concerned about you; she hasn't looked very well. She's so worried about you… I'm really happy that you two are so close."
Liang Di spoke like a caring older sister.
Laura's heart softened a little because she heard Liang Di say that Gladys's complexion hadn't been good because she was worried about her. Thinking back carefully, Gladys had indeed looked unwell recently.
So, it was because she was worried about me?
"Ah!"
Gladys sneezed loudly in her sleep, smacked her lips twice, rolled over, and mumbled, "Laura... don't be sad, I'll share my blood clot with you."
After saying this, she drifted back to sleep.
Actually, she hadn't slept well, hence her pale complexion.
However, Laura believed what she believed to real.
"Miss Liang Di, Miss Liang Lin... some things, even if I say them, can't be resolved."
Laura finally spoke, but her voice was filled with bitterness and resentment.
Liang Lin frowned.
Laura used to be sentimental, but never this much. Now, she looked half-dead, as if she might be killed at any moment, devoid of any enthusiasm or desire for life.
"Laura, have you been bullied?"
This was the only reason Liang Lin could think of in her limited mind. She gripped Laura's shoulders seriously.
"If you've really been bullied, you must tell us. We'll stand up for you. I know you're timid, scared, and afraid of causing trouble, but we're not afraid. If you've been bullied, we'll stand up for you!"
Laura was momentarily stunned by the swaying, but quickly regained her senses, a warm feeling welling up inside her.
Although Liang Lin had guessed wrong, and wildly wrong at that, the underlying meaning of her words was concern for her.
Thinking back to their second encounter, when Liang Lin, like a hero, rescued her from so many terrifying people, even lifting her up in her arms with a majestic air, Laura suddenly felt less afraid of her future fate.
If Liang Lin hadn't saved her, she would have died long ago in that basement where blood was being drawn. So, it could be said that her second life was given to her by this spirited and charismatic young woman before her.
Thinking of this, Laura felt even less afraid.
"Miss Liang Lin..."
She finally mustered the courage to speak about herself.
“If you were given a choice right now,” Laura pondered for a moment, “would you choose to exchange your death for world peace and tranquility?”
Without hesitation, Liang Lin stood ramrod straight, her eyes resolute.
“I would die immediately, without any hesitation. If my death could bring peace to the world, I would die with a clear conscience, and even be grateful that there truly is a God, and that God would give me such an option.”
Although she had already guessed that Liang Lin would say “I would die” without hesitation, hearing it with her own ears still deeply shocked Laura.
“Then, Miss Liang Di, what about you?”
Laura’s gaze fell on Liang Di.
Liang Di hesitated slightly, looking at Liang Lin.
To be honest, although she wasn’t as obsessive and selfish as before, she still hoped to live with Liang Lin, a happy life forever. She didn’t have any grand ambitions, nor did she yearn for world peace; all she wanted was to be with the person she loved forever.
“Liang Di, if you die, I will die with you.”
Liang Lin seemed to sense Liang Di’s hesitation.
Upon hearing this, a sickly red flush rose on Liang Di’s cheeks, and she finally smiled, revealing her pearly white teeth.
This time, her answer was without hesitation.
“Then of course I’m willing to die. I want to die with my sister Liang Lin; that would be a happy ending.”
Although it wasn’t a very respectable reason for dying, Liang Di seemed unafraid of death.
Sigh.
Laura sighed heavily.
So, it turned out that only me who is afraid of death.
At this point, the knot in her heart seemed to have been half untied.
“Miss Liang Lin, Miss Liang Di, do you think it’s normal for someone to be afraid of death, to be particularly terrified of dying, and to not want to die?”
She asked this very cautiously, as if afraid of being scolded by the two of them for being a coward, a shrinking turtle.
Liang Lin and Liang Di didn’t answer the other’s question immediately; they both thought for a while.
Finally, Liang Di spoke first.
“I think it’s very normal for someone to be afraid of death. No one in this world wants to die, unless... they have no attachment to this world anymore, that they are utterly disappointed with it. So, being a coward isn’t bad; in fact, it can make you live longer and happier than others.”
Liang Lin shook her head, indicating her disagreement with Liang Di’s words.
“Being afraid of death is normal, but when faced with a crisis, continuing to be afraid of death, not daring to resist, or being selfish to the extreme, those are… repulsive qualities.”
At this point, she changed the subject.
"Of course, I also know that everyone is different. I have no right to criticize other people's personalities. Some people are born timid, and I have no right to judge their personalities."
